Division 1, County Senior Football League, Round 1.

Kilcummin 0-15, Templenoe 3-04.

A strong second half display from the recently crowned All Ireland Intermediate Club Champions, saw them take a full share of the spoils against Templenoe last Sunday.

Kilcummin who were greeted onto the field with a guard of honour from the visitors, opened the scoring with a point from play from Matt Keane. Despite playing into the breeze, Templenoe responded promptly and were awarded a penalty following a foot block on a Stephen O’Sullivan effort. Brian Crowley cooly slotted home the spot kick for the away side’s first goal. Kilcummin did reply with Gary O’Leary popping over a point, but it was Templenoe who were on top in the early stages. Josh Crowley Holland added second goal for the visitors when he cut in from the left corner to take on the Kilcummin defence, before unleashing a low shot to the net. Stephen O’Sullivan then extended Templenoe’s advantage with a pointed free. Kevin Gorman and John Spillane swapped points, before Adrian Spillane set up Stephen O’Sullivan for the Templenoe’s third goal, to put them 3-2 to 0-3 ahead after 17 minutes. However, the home side then started to get a grip on proceedings as they edged their way back into the game point by point. Two efforts from Matt Keane along with scores from Noel Duggan, Philip Casey and Mikey O’Shea saw them reduce the deficit to just three points before the break. In between Templenoe were almost in for yet another goal, but Adrian Spillane had his attempt brilliantly saved by former All Star keeper Brendan Kealy.

Half Time Score: Kilcummin 0-8, Templenoe 3-02.

Kilcummin came out on the field in determined fashion for the second half and a pointed free from Noel Duggan, followed by another score from the impressive Matt Keane saw them cut the Templenoe lead to the minimum. Templenoe’s best opportunity of a score in the opening minutes of the second half stemmed from a mix up in the Kilcummin defence, when Teddy Doyle superbly intercepted a pass, but his finish went high and wide of the posts. The hosts pushed on and eventually regained the lead with two well taken points from John McCarthy and Matt Keane. Brian Crowley levelled matter again after he combined with Stephen O’Sullivan to plant the ball over the bar. The next ten minutes saw both sides waste a few chances, but perhaps the most crucial moment was when Brendan Kealy made another wonderful save to stop a goal bound effort from Brian Crowley. With 10 minutes to go the score remained all square at 0-12 to 3-3. However, in the ensuing passages of play Kilcummin upped the ante once more and a brace of points from Noel Duggan (2f) and John McCarthy put them three points in front coming into closing stages. Ultimately, Templenoe’s downfall was their return of only two points in the second half, with Brian Crowley getting their final score from a free in the 26th minute. Although they did have one last attempt from Stephen O’Sullivan, but his effort was denied yet again by Brendan Kealy.
