County Senior Football League, Division 2, Round 5.

Templenoe 1-07, Glenbeigh-Glencar 0-15

The Templenoe senior footballers suffered their first defeat in 2023 at the hands of Glenbeigh-Glencar in Templenoe last Saturday evening. It was lacklustre display by Templenoe on the night against a much hungrier Glenbeigh-Glencar side determined to reverse the result of the corresponding fixture from last year.

On fine evening for football, the hosts actually started well and raced into a 0-03 to 0-00 lead after seven minutes, with two placed balled from Stephen O’Sullivan and Aidan Crowley, before the latter put over another from play from a tight angle. Glenbeigh-Glencar responded with Caolim Teahan (f) and Gavan O’Grady (f) both splitting the posts. Then great work by Sean Sheehan put through Stephen O’Sullivan on goal and he did everything right only to see his effort come off the base of the post. It was a let off to the visitors, who despite this were coming more and more into the game. Two points from Liam Smith and Gavin O’Grady (f) saw Glenbeigh-Glencar take the lead for the first time to make the score 0-03 to 0-04 after 15 minutes. Both sides exchanged a few wides, before Templenoe wing back Ciaran Crowley showed great confidence to take on the Glenbeigh-Glencar defence before rifling the ball to the net for a well taken goal. However, the visitors regrouped quickly and responded admirably with three unanswered points to retake the lead courtesy of scores from Caolim Teahan (2) and Gavan O’Grady. Templenoe were struggling to ignite but did get the final score of the half through a converted free from Stephen O’Sullivan.

Half Time Score: Templenoe 1-04, Glenbeigh-Glencar 0-07

The third quarter saw Glenbeigh-Glencar hit the ground running and blitz Templenoe with seven points on the trot, with Jack Brosnan, Gavan O’Grady (5) and Darran O’Sullivan all contributing. In between, the visitors also nearly had goal, but were denied by a great Mark Looney save. Also, worth mentioning that the Glenbeigh-Glencar shooting throughout was very good, they only hit four wides, while Templenoe had six with less possession. The hosts did have a brief respite midway through the second half with Stephen O’Sullivan and Patrick Clifford both finding the target to make the score 1-06 to 0-14. However, a comeback never looked likely, with Glenbeigh-Glencar very organised getting plenty of bodies back when on the defensive and as a result Templenoe were unable to work an opening for much needed goal to bring them back into the game. Glenbeigh-Glencar closed out the contest with another Gavin O’Grady score to cap a fine performance with his ninth score of the evening, while Aidan Crowley thumped over a free for Templenoe’s last score.
