County Senior Football League, Division 2, Round 5.

Miltown/Castlemaine 3-12, Templenoe 0-12.

Templenoe’s 100% record in the county league came to an end at the hands of Miltown/Castlemaine in Miltown last Sunday afternoon. The hosts lead all the way through and withstood a strong fight back from Templenoe early in the second half.

The game was played in ideal conditions. The first quarter very much belonged to Miltown, with the hosts outscoring the visitors by 1-04 to 0-01. Brendan Casey, David Roche, Diarmuid Quirke and Sean Hogan all found the target, before Cian O’Connor got in for their first goal after the hosts reacted quickest to the breaks from a Templenoe kickout to pave the way for O’Connor to plant the ball into the net. Templenoe’s solitary score in that period came from the boot of Gavin Crowley.

Templenoe did come a bit more into the game in the second quarter with two points from Mark Casey either side of a Sean Hogan point keeping them in touch,

Half Time Score: Miltown/Castlemaine 1-05, Templenoe 0-03.

At the restart, Templenoe came out all guns blazing and hit four unanswered points to leave just the bare minimum between the sides after 33 minutes, with Mark Casey nailing a two-pointer effort, while Ciaran Crowley and Colin Crowley also chipped in with a point each. However, David Roche and Charlie Griffin responded with two flags, before Eanna O’Connor and Micheal O’Mahony traded points to make the score 1-08 to 0-09 after 41 minutes of play.

From there Miltown started getting into their groove. Eanna O’Connor pointed from play and from a placed ball to precede Miltown’s second goal of the day from Sean Hogan to extend the margin to seven points and effectively kill off the visitors challenge. In fairness, Templenoe fought to the end and they have further points from Mark Casey, Gavin Crowley and Patrick Clifford, but on the day Miltown just seemed to have more in the tank and finished out the game in style tagging on two more points from Brendan Casey and Diarmuid Quirke before Charlie Griffin put a gloss on the scoreline with their third goal.
