Templenoe 2-20, Listry 0-11.

After an unprecedented nine month absence from competitive action due to the Covid-19 restrictions, Templenoe seniors locked horns with Listry in the opening round of the County League on Sunday. It turned out a very comfortable afternoon for the hosts, who had 15 points to spare in the finish.

Templenoe took control right from the very start and raced into a 0-6 to 0-00 lead courtesy of scores from Stephen O’Sullivan (4), Patrick Clifford and Teddy Doyle in match played in beautiful sunshine. The visitors opened their account with a point from play from Sean O’Sullivan on the 9th minute, but they were struggling to keep pace with the slicker and fitter Templenoe who tagged on another three points before the first water break, with Stephen O’Sullivan, Patrick Clifford and John Rice inflicting further misery on the visitors. In between, Anthony Sweeney had a pointed free for Listry to make the score 0-9 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter.

On resumption, Stephen O’Sullivan continued where he left off with another brace of points, before Brian Crowley added his name to the scoresheet with two well taken scores either side of two pointed frees from Anthony Sweeney. Templenoe were then dealt a blow when sharpshooter Stephen O’Sullivan had to make way due to injury, but there was no way the home side were going to lose their grip on this contest and more scores followed with Denis O’Neill hitting two scores on the trot, to which all Listry could reply with was another pointed free from Anthony Sweeney.

Half Time Score: Templenoe 0-15, Listry 0-5.

Almost immediately after the restart came the first goal of the game, which was brilliantly finished home to the bottom left hand corner by Josh Crowley Holland and soon after the hosts raised a second green flag with Denis O’Neill burying the ball to the roof of the net following another good team move. Listry then had a brief respite with John Foley and Anthony Sweeney splitting the posts to add to an earlier effort from their full forward Ruairi Murphy. This made the score 2-16 to 0-8 ahead of the 2nd half water break.

The final quarter was mostly academic with Templenoe emptying their bench and pushing on to reach the 20 points barrier with Brian Crowley (2), John Rice and John Moriarty making no mistakes with their efforts. But Listry fought to the end and they did have one good goal chance that was well saved by Templenoe Keeper Mark Looney on tough day at the office for them. Listry’s final scores of the game came from Sean O’Sullivan, Anthony Sweeney and Ruairi Murphy. All in all it was an encouraging start to the season for the Templenoe seniors.
