Templenoe 3-12, Austin Stacks 4-10
Templenoe and Austin Stacks combined to serve up a great hour of football in the final round of the County Senior Football League this afternoon. The match ebbed and flowed with the visiting team coming away with a one point victory, on a damp Sunday afternoon in Templenoe GAA Grounds.
David Mannix opened the match scoring with a point, but this was immediately cancelled out by a Danny Cahalane point with the outside of his right foot from 45 metres. After a series of wides by both teams, Teddy Doyle pointed a free, but the very influential Shane O’Callaghan responded with his first point of the day. Killian Spillane and Teddy Doyle pointed to extend Templenoe’s lead, and a further Teddy Doyle point on the 20th minute saw the scoreline, Templenoe 0-05, Austin Stacks 0-02.
The final ten minutes of the half saw the momentum swing strongly in the favour of the visitors. Darragh O’Brien pointed a 45’, and this was quickly followed by points from David Mannix and Shane O’Callaghan. Gavin Crowley got one score back from Templenoe, but a lapse in concentration by Templenoe in a three minute period resulted in Austin Stacks coming away with 2 goals and a point. The two Austin Stacks goals coming from Shane O’Callaghan and David O’Sullivan. Templenoe rescued the situation when a strong Teddy Doyle run made space for Gavin Crowley to score a goal leaving the half time score, Templenoe 1-06, Austin Stacks 2-06.
Templenoe came out in a very determined fashion in the second half. Shane Cremin and Patrick Clifford were introduced as subs, and by the 36th minute, both teams were level as a result of three Templenoe points from Killian Spillane (2) and John Rice. A David Mannix free returned Stacks to the lead and soon after Templenoe were dealt a blow, when Midfielder Micheal O’Donnell, sold a dummy solo to buy some space on the right sideline, and suddenly found himself with an open path on goal. He finished the ball high to the net, and 2 more points from the visitors saw a gap open between the sides with the score on the 45th minute, Templenoe 1-10, Austin Stacks 3-09.
The game was far from over though, and a quick cameo from Pat Spillane resulted in a goal and a point scored to tighten up the arrears. Both scores came from good overlapping team work from Templenoe to open space for the Templenoe Corner forward. Austin Stacks started to play more defensive football which left plenty of room for their dangerous forwards, and a quick attack up the field resulted in a David Mannix point. Killian Spillane responded again with another free, but another quick attack resulted in two Austin Stacks players moving on goal with only Tadhg Morley back for Templenoe. David Mannix worked the ball well, and held on long enough to put Shane O’Callaghan through for his 2nd goal of the match. This was on the 55th minute and Stacks led on a score of Templenoe 2-11, Austin Stacks 4-10.
Templenoe again didn’t back down and were committing a lot of people to attack. They were rewarded when Adrian Spillane scored Templenoe’s 3rd goal of the match, and the next attack witnessed a ball passed to Killian Spillane, which flicked off the upright and was cleared. There was five minutes played in extra time, with Gavin Crowley pointing to reduce Austin Stacks to the minimum. Templenoe’s last two attacks yielded no scores, and saw their brave effort fall short with the final score of Templenoe 3-12, Austin Stacks 4-10.
After today’s match, Templenoe finished out their 1st ever year in Division 1 in joint 3rd position, which is a great result for the effort through the year.
