Templenoe’s last game of the county league ended in defeat away to Miltown/Castlemaine on Saturday evening.
Templenoe had wind advantage for the first half, but it was the hosts who got off to the perfect start with 1-02 inside the first 3 minutes courtesy of points from Cathal Moriarty and Dara Hogan, before they midfielder Sean Hogan added a goal after they turned over possession from Templenoe at the other end. To their credit Templenoe responded well this setback with two 2pointers on the trot through Aidan Crowley (f) and Gavin Crowley. Soon after Adrian Spillane tied the scores after he split the posts from close range. Aidan Crowley (2 pointer) traded scores with Cathal Moriarty, Gavin Mckenna and Eanna O’Connor, before Templenoe suffered another sucker punch when Cathal Moriarty got in for a goal for Milltown to make the score 2-05 to 0-07 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the hosts outscore Templenoe by four points to three, with Dara Hogan (2), Brendan Casey and Gavin Mckenna finding the target for Milltown, while the visitors had white flags from Aidan Crowley (2) and Adrian Spillane.
Half Time Score: Milltown/Castlemaine 2-09, Templenoe 0-10.
It was always going to be a tall order for Templenoe to turn this game in their favour facing the wind for the second half. Though they did get the first score of the second half with Aidan Crowley thumping a free over the bar, it did not take long for Milltown to start turning the screw on their opponents. By the end of the third quarter the score was 2-15 to 0-12, with Eanna O’Connor (2pointer), Dara Hogan (2), David Roche and Conor Spillane all finding the range, while Templenoe’s solitary score in their period came the boot of Aidan Crowley (f). The visitors cause was not helped by a lot of wides.
The outcome was now inevitable and both sides used the opportunity to empty their benches. Milltown put the icing on the cake by way of their third goal of the day with Dara Hogan crowning a fine individual display by him to find the net. Eanna O’Connor added a few more scores to his tally to extend their lead further. Templenoe fought to the end had scores from Aidan Crowley and Gavin Crowley (2 pointer), on what was an otherwise forgettable day at the office for the visitors. Attention will now to the Club Championship, with Templenoe due to play Na Gaeil in the opening round.
