Templenoe Crest

County Senior Football League, Division 2, Round 6.

Templenoe 0-16, Glenbeigh/Glencar 1-14.

Glenbeigh/Glencar edged Templenoe in a gripping contest played at Templenoe GAA Grounds last Saturday evening.

On a fine evening for football, with little or no breeze both teams quickly settled quickly into proceedings. The score at the end of the first quarter was Templenoe 0-04, Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-05. Templenoe opened scoring through Aidan Crowley, while Adrian Spillane, Micheál O'Mahony and Colin Crowley also got their names on the score sheet in this period. The visitors got off the mark courtesy of Liam Roche, followed by a 2 pointer from Pa Kilkenny before Tommy Quirke and Aodhan Roche tagged on two more points.

The second quarter initially saw Glenbeigh/Glencar pull further ahead with Gavan O’Grady landing over a second 2 pointer for the visitors. But Templenoe quickly reduced the deficit with a brace from Aidan Crowley to left just one point between the sides once more. Also noteworthy to mention that Templenoe had three goal chances in the first half only to be denied each time by Glenbeigh keeper Cian Knight, who proved to be an effective shot stopper on the evening. Glenbeigh’s last score in the first half came from the boot of Sean Quirke. However, it was the hosts who finished the first half the stronger with Sean Sheehan, Colin Crowley and Micheál O'Mahony (2) all chipping in to hit four unanswered points and thus put them two points to the good at the break.

Half Time Score: Templenoe 0-10, Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-08.

On resumption Martin Reilly extended Templenoe’s lead to three points, but then came the all important goal when Glenbeigh’s Gavan O’Grady showed his class to get through the Templenoe defence before applying the perfect finish and make it a draw game. Buoyed by the goal, three points on the trot ensued from the visitors with Aodhan Roche, Liam Roche, and Fionn O’Sullivan all splitting the posts, with Templenoe keeper Josh Linnane doing well to deflect the latter’s goal bound effort over the bar. Martin Reilly and Adian Crowley traded scores with Keilen O’Sullivan to make it 1-12 to 0-13 at the end of the third quarter.

It was all to play for and Templenoe had a trick up their sleeve by way of Teddy Doyle making a very welcome to return to the blue and white jersey for the first time since 2021. Teddy immediately made an impact, displaying great skill to avoid the challenges from the Glenbeigh defenders before popping the ball over the bar. Things got even better for the hosts in the 52nd minute when Aidan Crowley pointed a free to level the scoring. Fionn O’Sullivan edged the visitors ahead again with his second point, Templenoe subsequently missed two chances to tie the scores once more, before Glenbeigh substitute Rian O’Donovan got their last score with just two minutes of normal time remaining on the clock. It looked like Templenoe would need at least a two pointer to salvage something from this game. Aidan Crowley did fire over one point in the hope that there might just about be time for one last hurrah. Templenoe did win the resultant kick-out and earned a free, but problem was it was from a considerable distance out and it was make or break for the hosts. Aidan Crowley took on the responsibility and his effort though well struck did not have the accuracy. With that the referee blew for full time.
