Laune Rangers 1-12, Templenoe 1-12.

Templenoe senior footballers made the trip to Killorglin to face Laune Rangers in round 9 of the county league. After a hard fought battle, the game ended in a draw which was enough to officially confirm promotion for Laune Rangers, while the result leaves Templenoe mid-table and still in contention for promotion, but not yet safe from relegation in an extraordinarily competitive Division 2.

The match was played in wet conditions with a cross-field breeze in play. Stephen O’Sullivan who recently returned from Australia to play his first game for Templenoe since 2023, immediately showed he hadn’t lost his class by slotting over Templenoe’s opening point with his first touch of the ball. Aidan Crowley added another soon after, before Brian Crowley hit the base of the post. The visitors were laying down a marker to prove they were well up for this contest and further evidence came in the 16th minute when Gavin Crowley finished the ball to the net superbly on the run after he was put through on goal. This made the score 0-00 to 1-02.

Remarkably, it took Laune Rangers 19 minutes to register their first score of the game courtesy of a pointed free from John Tyther. That said Laune Rangers would go on to dominate the second quarter, they were getting on top around the midfield area. Ranger’s Eoin Clifford raised an orange flag to reduce the margin to two points, but Aidan Crowley kept the sides at arm’s length with another point for the visitors. Laune Rangers then hit three wides in row, before the referee awarded them a penalty after Templenoe committed a foul inside the box. Up stepped John Tyther but his spot kick was brilliantly saved by Mark Looney. The remaining minutes of the first half saw Darragh Clifford trade points with Aidan Crowley to leave Templenoe three points to the good at the break.

Half Time Score: Laune Rangers 0-04, Templenoe 1-04.

Both sides exchanged a few wides on resumption. However, Templenoe then coughed up possession from an attacking position, which ultimately lead to the Laune Rangers goal through Gearoid Hassett. Two minutes later Darragh Clifford put Laune Rangers ahead for the first and only time. Credit to Templenoe they responded well and hit four unanswered points with Stephen O’Sullivan, Brian Crowley and Aidan Crowley (2) all contributing to put the visitors 1-05 to 1-08 ahead at the end of the third quarter.

Aidan Crowley (2) swapped scores with Patrick Daly and John Tyther to keep it a three points game, as the contest enter the home stretch. Excitement was building and by the 58th minute Templenoe still had a three points lead after further scores were exchanged between, Templenoe’s Stephen O’Sullivan, Brian Crowley and John Tyther, Eoin Clifford for the Rangers. John Tyther gave the hosts a lifeline with a pointed free well into injury time. From the resultant kickout, Rangers just about manged to get the break and worked the ball into the two-pointer range and draw a free from the Templenoe defence. Gearoid Hassett kept his composure to split the posts for a two pointer with the last kick of very entertaining game.
