The eagerly awaited senior club championship first round clash between Austin Stacks and Templenoe ended with an eight points victory for the hosts after they withstood a third quarter surge from the visitors at Connolly Park on Sunday afternoon.
There was a bit rain ahead of the game, but this cleared up in time for throw-in and there was also a bit of a cross field breeze in play. Templenoe.had a frustrating opening first quarter to this game. They had a good share of the possession, but crucially they failed to convert the possession they had into scores. Templenoe hit three wides and had one effort that hit the post inside the first fifteen minutes and worse of all they had no score to show for their efforts. Austin Stacks seemed to move the ball quicker, they also forced a few turnovers and had better shot selection that saw them lead by 0-05 to 0-00 at the end of the first quarter with four different scorers Joe O’Connor, Eoghan Carroll, Armin Heindrich and Conor Horan (tp) free all contributing.
In the ensuing passages of play Austin Stacks extended their lead to 0-09 to 0-00 with four more players Cian Purcell, Ronan Carroll, Joey Nagle and Daniel Kirby adding their names to the score sheet. While the other end Templenoe’s Adrian Spillane had a goal effort that went agonisingly wide. Nothing was going right it seemed for Templenoe. But in the 25th minute Gavin Crowley joined the Templenoe attack to finally end their scoring drought with a well taken point.
Only other positive for Templenoe in the first half was that they conceded no goal and though Austin Stacks had an eight points advantage they were not yet out of sight.

Templenoe introduced Patrick Clifford for the second half in a bid to get back into the game. Whatever Templenoe Manager Paddy Curran said to his players at the interval, seemed to have the desired effect with Templenoe playing with far more intensity and energy in the third quarter. Aidan Crowley got the fight back underway with a monstrous two pointer free, which was quickly followed with the lively Pat Spillane marking his return to the blue and white jersey with a fine score. Ronan Carroll briefly interrupted the visitors flow with a white flag for the Stacks, before Killian Spillane kept up Templenoe’s resurgence with a two-pointer free. The hosts steadied the ship again with three scores on the trot from Daniel Kirby, Cian Purcell and Armin Heindrich. However, Templenoe remained steadfast and responded in style with Gavin Crowley firing over a two pointer before the Spillane brothers Adrian and Killian both split the posts to make the score 0-13 to 0-10 at the end of the third quarter.
Templenoe had a chance to reduce the margin further, but they were wide with their effort. With eleven minutes of normal time remaining Michael O’Donnell scored a pivotal point from a free for the Stacks to put more than a score in it. The remaining minutes of the game saw Templenoe gradually run out of steam, while Austin Stacks pushed on with county players Joe O’Connor and Dylan Casey both tagging on scores to put day light between the sides. Austin Stacks made sure of their win with a converted 45 from keeper Michael Tansley, before the impressive Ronan Carroll had the final say with his fourth point of the day.
