Joan Rice - RIP

It was with great sadness that the Templenoe GAA Club community learned of the death of our Club President, Joan Rice, Rossacussane and formerly of Coom on the 25th March 2026.
Joan had a lifelong association with Templenoe GAA and was an ever present at Templenoe GAA matches until recent times. A school- teacher by profession, Joan was also passionate and knowledgeable about football and was a very sociable person who was held in high regard in the community.
Joan was part of a wonderful family that achieved so much for the club. Her late husband Johnny served as Club Chairperson from 1968 to 1974. He was senior team manager when Templenoe reached their first County Intermediate final in 1988 and indeed he was a selector with the victorious Kerry All-Ireland minor team in 1975, while her late brother Ted was also an Honorary Club President. Joan’s sons John and Kevin were accomplished footballers who between them played football with the Kerry minors, U21s and Juniors and both played their parts with the Kenmare District team that won the 1987 county senior football championship. Joan’s daughter Ann is a valued club member and supporter as was her late daughter Bernie (Crowley) who sadly passed away in 2015. Joan was immensely proud to see her grandchildren Brian, Gavin, and Colin Crowley as well as John Rice all wear the Kerry jersey at minor level. Brian and Gavin went onto represent Kerry at U21 level and both won All-Ireland Junior medals with Kerry, before Gavin topped it off by winning an All-Ireland senior medal with Kerry in 2022.
There were many other highlights for Joan along the way, but none more so than witnessing Templenoe winning an All-Ireland Junior Club title at Croke Park in 2016 and seeing Templenoe capture the Munster Intermediate Club title in 2019 with her son John as manager. Joan will be sadly missed by all at Templenoe GAA Club and we offer our heartfelt condolences to John, Kevin, Anne and to all the extended Rice, O’Sullivan and Crowley families.

McCarthy Insurance County Senior Football League Div 2:
St Marys 0-10, Templenoe 2-12. Well done to our senior footballers on getting their county league campaign off to a good start with an eight-points win away to St Marys on the 15th March.
Templenoe will play Castleisland Desmonds at home in round 2 of the County Senior Football League this weekend. All support welcome. Please follow our social media for confirmation of date and throw-in time.
Allianz Football League Final:
We wish Tadhg, Killian, the Kerry senior footballers and management the very best of luck in the Allianz Football League final against Donegal this Sunday at Croke Park.

50th Anniversary and Medal Presentation:
The Templenoe County Junior Football team and officials from 1975 were recently honoured by the club to mark the 50th anniversary of their championship win at a function held in Ring of Kerry Golf Club. – On the same night our senior footballers were also presented with their 2025 South Kerry League medals.

McCarthy Insurance Group County SFL Div2 Match Report, St Mary's V Templenoe
St Marys 0-10, Templenoe 2-12.
For the third time in as many weeks the Templenoe cavalcade of senior team and supporters headed deep into South Kerry for the first round of the county league. Con Keating Park, Cahirciveen presented a very blustery aspect and was heavy underfoot. Templenoe opted to play against the strong wind in the first half and St. Marys' jumped into a three point lead in the first 12 minutes. Brian Crowley opened the Templenoe account with a point after 13 minutes. They followed up with 2 points to the 20th minute, but the hosts kept their noses in front with four more points - including a 2 pointer from Tadhg O'Connor. Then in the 26th minute Adrian Spillane pounced on a loose ball in the square to fairly blast a goal to the St. Marys' net. St Marys' Tadhg O'Connor scored another 2 pointer just before half time, while Templenoe introduced Killian Spillane shortly before the short whistle.
The second half started with Marys' scoring a point from a mark in the 31st minute. This was to be their last score of the game as Killian Spillane took the game by the scruff of the neck with three 2 pointers in as many minutes. A slick, speedy passing move by Templenoe in the 45th minute ended with Brian Crowley scoring a tasty goal, and effectively ended the contest. Templenoe finished out the game with three more unanswered points to get their Division 2 league campaign off the a fine start.

McCarthy Insurance South Kerry League Final Match Report, Templenoe V Reenard
Templenoe 1-15, Renard 2-14.
A two pointer at the death from Mark Sugrue put Renard in front for the first time in the game, but crucially it was also at the only time the scoreboard mattered and it was enough to crown Renard as the South Kerry League champions for 2026.
The game was played at Valentia GAA Grounds in wintery conditions. Templenoe had the advantage of a strong wind for the first half and they hit four wides before they eventually got off the mark with a two pointer free from Micheal O’Mahony in the 9th minute. The scores were now starting to flow for Templenoe with Hugh Granville, Mark Looney (45) and Gavin Crowley (tp) extending Templenoe’s lead to 0-06 to 0-00 by the end of the first quarter.
Martin Reilly (tp) exchanged scores with Sean Teahan for Renard’s first point, before four points on the trot from John Spillane (2), Mark Casey and Adrian Spillane put Templenoe in a strong position approaching the interval. But then came the turning point in the game when a high ball in towards the square resulted in penalty for Renard after the referee in consultation with one of his umpires adjudged a foul to have been committed by Templenoe. Up stepped Fintan O’Sullivan and he made no mistake to grab his side a lifeline.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 0-12, Renard 1-01
Ríain O’Byrne steadied himself well to pop over Templenoe’s first point of the second half but buoyed by their goal just before the break Renard hit back with 2 two pointers on the bounce courtesy of Mark Sugrue and Sean Teahan. However, Colin Crowley stemmed their tide with a goal after he drilled a low shot to the net, before Renard replied in kind with Fintan O’Sullivan raising a white flag, before following this up by netting his second goal in the 41st minute to make the score 1-13 to 2-06 and it was game on.
In the 46th minute Gavin Crowley had a goal effort well saved by Austin Murphy, but soon after Mark Looney kept Templenoe in the ascendancy with a pointed free. Renard remained determined though and between the 53rd minute and the 58th minute they made it count by hitting 5 unanswered points from Austin Murphy (3), Aidan O’Neill and William Galvin to make it a draw game. Mark Looney looked to have come to Templenoe’s rescue once more with another point from a placed ball, but a stubborn Renard side kept coming back and equalized again through James O’Sullivan. The game was now well into injury time and the tension was palpable and just when it looked like Extra-Time was inevitable Mark Sugrue tried his luck from way out in the left wing and the ball sailed over the bar for the match winning score.
