McCarthy Insurance Group County SFL, Division 2 Match Report, Templenoe V Castleisland Desmonds
County Senior Football League, Division 2, Round 2 (Back Game).
Templenoe 2-11, Castleisland Desmonds1-13.
Templenoe senior footballers had a crucial win at home to Castleisland Desmonds on Sunday afternoon, to take them out of the relegation zone. In doing so, Templenoe have also ironically put themselves back into promotion contention with three rounds of the county league remaining.
It was a lovely afternoon for a game of football. Castleisland Desmonds had the aid of a strong breeze for the first half, but it was the hosts who got off to a dream start with Brian Crowley and Ciaran Crowley both finding the net inside the first eight minutes. Desmonds quickly regrouped and responded with Brian Leonard thumping over a one pointer followed by a two pointer. Then Aidan Crowley traded points with Brian Leonard to leave the score at 2-01 to 0-04 at the end of the first quarter.
Desmonds squandered a few point chances, before Brian Crowley extended Templenoe’s lead to keep that bit of daylight between the sides. However, soon after the game was blown wide open when the Templenoe defence failed to clear their lines, and although keeper Mark Looney did well to save the initial effort, there no stopping the follow up shot from Denis O’Connor for a goal for the visitors. Things got even better for them a minute later when Chris Devane made it a draw game. The remaining minutes of the first half were very entertaining with Brian Crowley and Sean Sheehan briefly restoring Templenoe’s lead to two points before Graham O’Connor made full use of the wind to land two 2 pointers in a row to put the Desmonds in the ascendancy for the first time. With half time approaching, Mark Casey ventured up the field to fire over what would in the end turn out to be a pivotal point.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 2-05, Castleisland Desmonds1-09.
No doubt about it this was a big game for both sides, but Templenoe’s job got even harder when captain Adrian Spillane had to make way early in the second half after he picked up an injury. Credit to the hosts they dug deep and put together a purple patch that saw them hit four unanswered scores courtesy of Colin Crowley, Aidan Crowley (tp) and Gavin Crowley to make the score 2-09 to 1-09 at the end of the third quarter.
Castleisland Desmonds began the second half playing the possession game in the knowledge that Templenoe had wind advantage, but now they had to go on the attack and two scores from Maurice Hickey and Luka Brosnan saw them reduce the deficit to one point. Aidan Crowley with a 45 and Micheál O'Mahony from a free put Templenoe three points to the good once more, but there was still time for the Desmonds to test Templenoe’s mettle. Desmonds duly added two more scores through Graham O’Connor and Maurice Hickey amid rising tensions to set up an exciting finish. But in the end Templenoe did just about enough to hold on for a vital two county league points.
Final Score: Templenoe 2-11, Castleisland Desmonds1-13.

McCarthy Insurance County SFL, Division 2 Match Report, Templenoe V Firies
County Senior Football League, Division 2, Round 6.
Templenoe 1-13, Firies 1-21.
Templenoe suffered their fourth county league defeat in a row at home to Firies on Sunday afternoon. This result puts Templenoe on shaky ground, but they do have four county league games remaining in a very competitive Division 2.
The game was played in Sunny conditions and the hosts started well with brothers Gavin and Colin Crowley opening the scoring. Firies countered with scores from Darragh Donoghue and Cian Doe, before Adrian Spillane gave the Templenoe the edge at the end of the first quarter to make it 0-03 to 0-02. But in between Templenoe were dealt a significant blow when Teddy Doyle had to retire injured.
James Horgan tied the scores again, before substitute Patrick Clifford went through on goal and he made no mistake with his finish for Templenoe’s first goal in four games. In the ensuring passages of play, Templenoe tagged on two more points courtesy of Aidan Crowley and Hugh Granville, while the visitors had white flags from James Horgan, Cian Doe and Darragh Donoghue. Then in the 30th minute Niall Donohoue was vigilant to the ball coming off the upright and he was perfectly positioned to bury the ball past Mark Looney in the Templenoe goal. This put Firies ahead for the first time and though Templenoe did equalize just before the interval through Mark Casey, it meant that Firies would go in the happier at the break, with the visitors also having the wind advantage for the second half to come.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 1-06, Firies 1-06.
Firies somewhat blew Templenoe out of the water in the third quarter, outscoring their opponents by eight points to two. Their purple patch started with James Horgan (2) and Cian Doe splitting the posts. Martin Reilly briefly interrupted their flow with a point for the visitors, but then the visitors started to turn on the style with Cian Doe landing the first of his 3 two pointers. Further scores followed from Darragh Brosnan and Niall Donohue. Aidan Crowley and Cian Doe traded points to leave score at 1-08 to 1-14 at the end of the third quarter.
Templenoe tried hard to bring themselves back into the game and two pointed frees from Micheál O'Mahony, after Cian Doe had put Firies further ahead did reduce the margin to five points. But any hopes of a comeback were short lived with Cian Doe continuing to shoot the lights out, while his partner in crime James Horgan was unerring throughout with his free taking. Cian Doe added 2 more two more pointers to bring his personal tally up to an impressive eleven points. Templenoe had consolation scores from Adrian Spillane, Colin Crowley and Mark Casey, before Diarmuid O’Mahony got his name on the score sheet for the visitors with their last play.
Final Score: Templenoe 1-13, Firies 1-21.

McCarthy Insurance Group County SFL, Division 2 Match Report, Listowel Emmets v Templenoe
Listowel Emmets 2-13, Templenoe 0-11.
An 11th hour change of venue saw Templenoe make the 2 hour trip to a cold, wet and windy Ballydonoghue for the County League round 7 clash with Listowel Emmets on Sunday.
Templenoe played against the strong wind and driving rain in the first half. Aidan Crowley opened the scoring for Templenoe with a fine point, quickly matched by similar from Darragh Lynch.
From there to half time it was pretty much even stevens with a brief Templenoe lead being cancelled out by 2 two pointers from Emmets. Having played against the elements Templenoe were probably the happier at the short whistle with the game deadlocked at 0:06 each!
Whatever was said to Emmets at the break, had the desired effect as they got quicker to breaking ball and began direct running at Templenoe. They scored 2:07 in the half, with only Brian Crowley 0:04 and Teddy Doyle 0:01 troubling the scoreboard for the visitors. Templenoe were not helped by being turned over a number of times and some poor shot selection. As the wind dropped and the rain stopped the game concluded on a 2:13 to 0:11 scoreline.
The lack of showers at the venue did not help the mood as the cold and wet Templenoe players began the long journey home.
