Garvey's SuperValu County Senior Football Championship Match Report, Templenoe V Dr Crokes
Garvey’s SuperValu County Senior Football Championship, Quarter-Final.
Templenoe 0-06, Dr Crokes 1-22.
Our season ended on a disappointing note with a heavy defeat to Dr Crokes last Sunday. But the task was probably always going to be that bit difficult, due to the absence of some key players and then we had to replace no less than three players in the first half due to injury, which against a team of Crokes calibre made it impossible. Overall though, it was still not a bad season by any means for Templenoe. We retained our senior status and made it to the semi-final of the club championship, we won our first round game in the county championship and came within one win of reaching the Division 1 promotion play-off stage.
The match was played in ideal conditions with Fitzgerald Stadium the venue. The opening score of the contest came from Gavin White following one of his trade mark runs up the field. Stephen O’Sullivan countered with a free for Templenoe after Teddy Doyle fouled, but then Dr Crokes turned on the style to hit four unanswered points courtesy of Tony Brosnan (2), Micheal Burns and David Shaw. Brian Crowley briefly interrupted their flow with a much needed point for Templenoe, but shortly beforehand Josh Crowley Holland was almost in for a goal for Templenoe, only to be denied by Crokes keeper Shane Murphy. Dr Crokes heeded the warning and finished out the opening quarter with three more scores without reply coming from Michael Burns, Tony Brosnan and Kieran O’Leary to make it 0-02 to 0-08 at the first water break.
Micheal Burns and Tony Brosnan increased the Killarney side’s advantage with two more white flags either side of another Brian Crowley score for Templenoe. Soon after Teddy Doyle and Stephen O’Sullivan both had to retire injured for Templenoe, which was something Templenoe could ill afford to happen. To their credit though, Templenoe did hit two points in a row in perhaps their best spell of the game to reduce the margin back to five points, but unfortunately it was only a temporary reprieve. Just before the interval, Dr Cokes were awarded a penalty and Tony Brosnan duly obliged to effectively end the game as a contest.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 0-05, Dr Crokes 1-10.
With Michael Hallissey also having to make way due to injury just before the half time break, Templenoe had now used up three substitutes, much sooner than they would have planned. Dr Crokes for their part continued to play excellent football in the second half with Brian Looney among those to impress, kicking five points to prove he still has plenty left in his locker. Templenoe’s sole score in the second half came from a Brian Crowley free, on a day when Templenoe just had a very forgettable afternoon in front of the posts, hitting 9 wides in total. Whereas Dr Crokes were far more clinical and had only 4 wides in the whole hour of action. By the end of the third quarter Dr Crokes were 0-06 to 1-13 ahead.
Jordan Kiely came off the bench in the final quarter to inflict further misery on Templenoe, with three well taken scores (one free). David Shaw and Kieran O’Leary also went on to add to their tallies, before Crokes completed their resounding win with substitute Tom Doyle getting his name on the scoresheet. Indeed the final margin could even have been more were it not for Templenoe keeper Mark Looney making a few brilliant point blank saves.
Final Score: Templenoe 0-06, Dr Crokes 1-22
Scorers:
Templenoe: Brian Crowley 0-03 (2f), Colin Crowley 0-01 (1f), Tadhg Morley 0-01, Stephen O’Sullivan 0-01.

Garveys SuperValu County Senior Football Championship Match Report, Templenoe V Shannon Rangers
Garvey’s SuperValu County Senior Football Championship, Round 1.
Templenoe 1-09, Shannon Rangers 0-05
Templenoe are through to the quarter-final stages of the County Championship for the second year running, following a surefooted display to overcome Shannon Rangers in atrocious conditions at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. In doing so, Templenoe created more history by defeating a divisional side in the County Championship for the first time in the club’s history.
Templenoe went into this contest without the services of net minder Mark Looney, Patrick Clifford, Killian Spillane and there were injury concerns over Adrian Spillane and Teddy Doyle. Certainly not the ideal scenario to go into this game. Shannon Rangers meanwhile won the toss, but perhaps unwisely choose to play against the gale force wind and rain for the first half. From throw-in, it was Templenoe that pretty much hit the ground running and controlled the play from the off with most of the action taking place inside the Shannon Rangers half. But such were the conditions that scores were hard earned and it took six minutes for the first point to arrive with Colin Crowley doing well to slot over a placed ball. His brother Brian then doubled Templenoe’s advantage before Stephen O’Sullivan added another shortly before the first water break to make it 0-03 to 0-00.
Buoyed by their performance in the opening quarter, but equally knowing there was little in it score wise, Templenoe kept pushing forward. Their ball handling, retention and turnover’s continued to be far superior than their opponents and it didn’t take long for Templenoe to get their next score courtesy of Gavin Crowley. Further chances followed before a brace of points from Brian Crowley and Stephen O’Sullivan gave Templenoe a six points lead. Shannon Rangers did have opportunities to open their account, but failed to find the target. Then just before the interval, Adrian Spillane popped over point number 7 for Templenoe to put more than 2 goals between the sides. Normally, this would be a great position to be in, but facing into a gale for the second half, meant there were no guarantees as to the outcome of this contest.
Half Time Score: Templenoe 0-07, Shannon Rangers 0-00.
Just two minutes after the restart Teddy Doyle helped settle the nerves of the Templenoe supporters with a beautifully struck free from an acute angle to increase the margin to eight points. However, Shannon Rangers were beginning to come more into it and finally got off the mark in the 35th minute with their centre forward Padraig Boyle pointing from play. Paul Kennelly followed this up with a converted free almost immediately after. This brought the deficit back to six points and gave the Rangers hope of comeback, there was certainly plenty of time remaining. That was until Tadhg Morley got forward in the 41st minute to set up Stephen O’Sullivan for the game’s only goal and from there the result was never in doubt. Shannon Rangers substitute Jack Kennelly did reply with a point just before the 2nd half water break to make the score 1-08 to 0-03.
Templenoe did what they had do to see out the last quarter. Shannon Rangers never really threatened the Templenoe replacement goalie Martin Reilly, who along with his defence held firm against each attack, restricting Shannon Rangers to just two more points from Jack Kennelly and Mark Buckley in the final quarter. In between John Rice helped made sure of Templenoe’s win with a fine score in the 57th minute.
Templenoe now march on to play Dr Crokes in a repeat of last year’s County Championship quarter final, which promises to be a fascinating contest especially with Templenoe having had a famous win over the Crokes just over one month ago in the Club Championship.
Final Score: Templenoe 1-09, Shannon Rangers 0-05
Scorers:
Templenoe: Stephen O’Sullivan 1-02, Brian Crowley 0-02, Adrian Spillane 0-01, Colin Crowley 0-01 (1f), Gavin Crowley 0-01, Teddy Doyle 0-01 (1f), John Rice 0-01.
