Hard luck to the Templenoe/Tuosist/Sneem/Derrynane U15 footballers who were just pipped at the post in the county league Div 6 final. Our U15 footballers fought back heroically to draw the game at the end of normal time having trailed Dromid/Waterville 0-02 to 1-06 at half time. Ultimately it took a goal from Dromid/Waterville in the dying minutes of Extra-Time to decide the outcome.

The Templenoe players involved were Mark Foley, James Leonard, Dara Mahony, Finn Byrne, Michael O Mahony and Shay Mulvanney.

Templenoe/Tuosist/Sneem/Derrynane management team was Micheál O’Mahony, Morgan O’Sullivan and Leonard Burns.

County Senior Football League, Division 2, Round 7.

Templenoe 4-10, Currow 2-13.

Templenoe welcomed the visit of Currow for round 7 of the county league last Sunday. After somewhat of a roller coaster, Templenoe held on to win by three points against a Currow side that refused to say die. This win means that Templenoe are now surely safe from relegation and with four rounds remaining to be played anything could happen in the promotion race, with only four points separating the teams at the top of the table from ninth place Glenbeigh-Glencar.

The game was played in dry conditions although it did rain a bit towards the end. The visitors started well with Pa McCarthy (f) and former Kerry senior player Seamus Scanlon opening the scoring. Scanlon was deployed at full forward and was dangerous throughout, but overall Kieran O’Neill and the Templenoe defence did a decent job of limiting his influence. Patrick Clifford and Stephen O’Sullivan got Templenoe off the mark in the fourth and fifth minutes, before Currow struck three unanswered points from Pa McCarthy (2f) and Luke Fitzgerald to make the score 0-02 to 0-05 at the end of the first quarter. Templenoe’s first goal came about when Patrick Clifford kicked in a direct ball to Aidan Crowley, Crowley turned and applied a lovely finish with the ball hitting the inside of the crossbar before landing in the net. A minute later Patrick Clifford added a goal of his own after he used his speed to take him past the Currow defence and he made no mistake with the finish. The purple patch for the hosts continued with Colin Crowley popping the ball over the bar to extend their lead to four points. However, the visitors to their credit didn’t panic and hit back with Pa McCarthy splitting the posts from frees and from play to keep them well in the game, while in between Mark Casey raised a white flag for Templenoe.

Half Time Score: Templenoe 2-04, Currow 0-08.

The second half couldn’t have started better for the hosts, with the referee awarding a penalty after Aidan Crowley was taken down. For the second weekend in a row Stephen O’Sullivan stepped up and calmly struck the spot kick giving the keeper no chance. Then just two minutes later Currow were hit with another hammer blow, when Stephen O’Sullivan combined brilliantly with Aidan Crowley before despatching the ball to the net for his second and Templenoe’s fourth goal of the day. The hosts were now eight points to the good and looked to be cruising or so we thought. Currow however had other ideas and didn’t read that script, a goal from Luke Fitzgerald in the 37th minute with points either side from Pa McCarthy and John Buckley blew the contest wide open again to make the score 4-04 to 1-10. Colin and Gavin Crowley put a bit more day light between the sides once more with two well taken scores before the end of the third quarter. The visitors though were doggedly keeping up their fight with substitute John O’Connor finding the range from play and from a placed ball either side of a Stephen O’Sullivan pointed free for the hosts. O’Sullivan then put Templenoe 4-09 to 1-12 ahead with two more scores and only seven minutes of normal time remaining. Not only that, but the visitors were now down to 14 players after John O’Connor was issued a black card by the referee. Anyone intending to leave early and beat the match traffic had to think again, when Currow corner forward John Buckley rifled the ball to the top corner of the net and then immediately after Pa McCarthy fired over a point and suddenly there was only two points between the sides with five minutes left to play. Templenoe were certainly making hard work of this game, but much to the relief of the home support Stephen O’Sullivan pointed a free in injury time to bag a full share of the spoils for the hosts.

Final Score: Templenoe 4-10, Currow 2-13.

All at Templenoe GAA Club wishes a speedy recovery to Currow’s Gearoid Coffey who picked a serious leg injury in the second half.
